Sexual Health
Sexual health is health. You can talk about it here.
Whether you need routine screening, have noticed a change or want to discuss something affecting your sexual wellbeing, Mahila offers confidential medical care in a private clinical setting.

There is no wrong reason to ask
You do not need to wait for symptoms or a crisis to discuss sexual health. You may want the reassurance of routine screening, advice after a change in partner, support with discomfort or a conversation about changes in desire or sexual function.
Sexual health can also be affected by periods, pelvic pain, hormones, menopause, medication, chronic illness, relationships and emotional wellbeing. These concerns can be discussed as part of your wider health, not treated as something separate or embarrassing.
02
Your sexual health appointment
Begin with what you want help with.
You may wish to discuss:
- 01
routine STI and blood-borne virus screening
- 02
sex without barrier protection or a change in sexual partner
- 03
a partner who has received an STI diagnosis
- 04
unusual discharge, odour, irritation, sores or bleeding
- 05
pain during or after sex
- 06
vaginal dryness or changes around perimenopause and menopause
- 07
reduced desire, arousal or changes in sexual function
- 08
contraception and pregnancy prevention
- 09
sexual wellbeing following illness, childbirth or surgery
Your doctor may ask about symptoms, sexual practices, barrier use, partners and relevant medical history so that any testing or advice can be matched to your circumstances. You can decide what you are comfortable discussing and ask why a question or test is relevant.
Testing may involve a urine sample, a self-collected or clinician-collected swab, a blood test or an examination if you have symptoms. Your doctor will explain what is recommended and how results and follow-up will be managed.

03
Confidential care without assumptions
Sexual health care should not make assumptions about your body, identity, orientation, relationships or sexual practices. Clear information allows your doctor to recommend appropriate testing and care, but you do not need to justify your choices.
If an examination is clinically appropriate, you can ask questions, request a support person, understand what it involves and provide or withhold consent.

04
Care may extend beyond testing
Screening is only one part of sexual health. Depending on your concern, care may include treatment, contraception, management of pain or hormonal symptoms, medication review, follow-up testing or referral to another health professional.
Where appropriate, your doctor may coordinate care with a sexologist, pelvic floor physiotherapist, psychologist, gynaecologist or another clinician.
