Perimenopause Care
You know when something has changed.
Changes to sleep, mood, periods, temperature, concentration or energy can begin before you expect them to. At Mahila, we look at the pattern of symptoms, your stage of life and your wider health to understand what may be happening.

Perimenopause can change more than your periods
For some women, the first sign is a change in their menstrual cycle. For others, it is waking during the night, feeling unusually anxious or irritable, struggling to concentrate, gaining weight or taking longer to recover from exercise.
Symptoms may appear gradually, fluctuate or feel unrelated. Periods can continue during perimenopause, and not every woman experiences hot flushes. The absence of one expected symptom does not make the changes you are experiencing less important.

Your perimenopause appointment
Look at what has changed across your health.
You may wish to discuss:
- 01
changes to the timing, length or flow of your periods
- 02
hot flushes, night sweats or feeling unusually warm or cold
- 03
disrupted or non-restorative sleep
- 04
anxiety, low mood, irritability or changes in emotional wellbeing
- 05
difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness or brain fog
- 06
fatigue or reduced energy
- 07
headaches, muscle aches or joint pain
- 08
vaginal dryness, urinary symptoms or pain during sex
- 09
changes in sexual desire
- 10
weight or body composition changes
Your doctor may ask when symptoms began, how they affect daily life, and about your periods, contraception, medication, medical history and family history.
Perimenopause is usually assessed from your age, symptoms and menstrual changes rather than one hormone test. Depending on your circumstances, your doctor may recommend tests to investigate other possible contributors or assess your wider health.
If available, bring the dates of recent periods, a list of medicines and supplements, previous results and brief notes about the symptoms affecting you most. You do not need to track everything before making an appointment.

03
Treatment is not limited to hormone therapy
Management depends on your symptoms, health history, preferences and priorities. Options may include menopausal hormone therapy, non-hormonal medication, contraception, support for vaginal or urinary symptoms, and practical changes relating to sleep, movement, nutrition and alcohol.
Hormone therapy may be appropriate for some women but not others. Your doctor will discuss potential benefits, risks and alternatives in the context of your individual health.

04
A time to review your wider health
Perimenopause is also an opportunity to review preventive health, including cardiovascular and metabolic risk, bone health and recommended screening.
Your care plan may address the symptoms affecting you now while also considering what needs to be monitored or protected over the years ahead.
