Pelvic Pain Care

Pelvic pain deserves a closer look.

Pelvic pain can be persistent, recurring or difficult to explain. At Mahila, your appointment begins with a careful review of what you are experiencing, how the pain has changed and how it is affecting your life.

When pelvic pain affects more than one part of life

When pelvic pain affects more than one part of life

Pelvic pain may be felt in the lower abdomen or pelvis. It can occur at particular times, such as during a period, sex, movement, urination or a bowel movement. For some people it is constant. For others it comes and goes.

Pain may also affect sleep, energy, work, exercise, relationships and emotional wellbeing. These details matter because they help build a clearer clinical picture.

Your pelvic pain appointment

Start with what you have noticed.

You may wish to discuss:

  • 01

    painful periods

  • 02

    pain between periods

  • 03

    pain during or after sex

  • 04

    pain when using the toilet

  • 05

lower abdominal, pelvic or lower back pain

  • 06

pressure, heaviness, burning, aching or sharp pain

  • 07

pain that limits work, exercise, sleep or everyday activity

  • 08

symptoms that have continued despite previous treatment

  • 09

a known condition, such as endometriosis or adenomyosis

  • 10

several symptoms that seem to overlap

You do not need to know what is causing the pain before you book.

Your doctor may ask when the pain began, where you feel it, whether it changes during your menstrual cycle, and whether you have related bladder, bowel or sexual health symptoms. The conversation may also cover previous diagnoses and treatments, medication, contraception, sleep, mood, energy and the effect of pain on daily life.

A physical examination may be discussed if it is clinically appropriate. You can ask questions, understand why an examination is being considered and provide or withhold consent.

Depending on your circumstances, the next step may include pathology, imaging, medication, symptom tracking, review over time or referral to another health professional.

If available, bring a list of your current medicines and supplements, previous scan or pathology reports, the dates of recent periods, and any notes about when the pain occurs. Do not delay making an appointment if you do not have this information. What you already know is enough to begin.

Pelvic pain can have more than one contributor

03

Pelvic pain can have more than one contributor

Pelvic pain is not a diagnosis by itself. Possible contributors include gynaecological conditions, bladder or bowel concerns, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, inflammation, nerve sensitivity and other health factors.

Sometimes one condition is identified. Sometimes several factors are involved. The aim of assessment is to understand the pattern of your symptoms and decide what should be investigated, treated or referred.

Care shaped by what the assessment finds

04

Care shaped by what the assessment finds

There is no single treatment plan for pelvic pain. Care depends on the possible contributors, the severity and pattern of your symptoms, previous treatment and what matters to you.

Where appropriate, your doctor may coordinate care with professionals such as a gynaecologist, pelvic floor physiotherapist, pain specialist, psychologist or another allied health clinician.
