Contraception Consultations
Contraception should work for your life, not against it.
The right contraceptive choice depends on more than effectiveness alone. Your health, periods, preferences, relationships and plans for the future all matter. At Mahila, you can discuss the options and make an informed decision without pressure.

Your needs may change over time
The contraception that suited you several years ago may not suit you now. You may be choosing contraception for the first time, considering a longer acting method, experiencing side effects or reassessing your options after pregnancy or during perimenopause.
Contraception may also be considered as part of care for heavy or painful periods, endometriosis, acne or other health concerns. The reason you are considering it helps shape the conversation.
02
Your contraception appointment
Understand the options before choosing one.
Your doctor may ask about:
- 01
what you want from contraception
- 02
methods you have used before and how they affected you
- 03
your periods and any related symptoms
- 04
your medical and family history
- 05
current medicines and supplements
- 06
sexual health and STI protection
- 07
pregnancy plans and how quickly you may want fertility to return
- 08
preferences about hormones, procedures, privacy and daily routines
Your doctor will explain suitable options, how they are used, possible side effects, risks and benefits. Depending on your decision, the next step may involve a prescription, a separate procedure appointment or referral to an appropriate provider.
If available, bring a list of your medicines and the name of any contraception you currently use or have used previously.
03
Contraceptive options
Options may include:
- 01
combined or progestogen-only contraceptive pills
- 02
contraceptive implants
- 03
hormonal or copper intrauterine devices
- 04
contraceptive injections
- 05
vaginal rings
- 06
barrier methods
- 07
fertility awareness methods
- 08
permanent contraception
- 09
emergency contraception
No method is right for everyone. Some options may not be suitable with particular health conditions or medications. Condoms are the only contraceptive method that also helps reduce the risk of sexually transmissible infections.

04
Choice without assumption
Contraception is a personal healthcare decision. You may want a method that is highly effective, easy to stop, hormone-free, discreet, helpful for period symptoms or simple to manage.
Your appointment is an opportunity to weigh what matters to you against the clinical considerations, then decide whether you are ready to proceed or would prefer more time.
