Painful periods are often treated as something to endure. When pain is severe, persistent or affecting daily life, it is worth investigating. Mahila provides care for women with suspected or diagnosed endometriosis.

Endometriosis is not only period pain
Endometriosis can affect people differently. Symptoms may change across the menstrual cycle and can involve more than the pelvis.

The severity of pain does not always reflect the extent of the condition. Your symptoms and their effect on your life are important parts of the clinical picture.

Your endometriosis appointment
Look at the pattern, not only the individual symptoms.
Your doctor may ask when your symptoms began, how they relate to your menstrual cycle, and whether they affect your bowel, bladder, sexual health, energy or fertility. The conversation may also cover your family history, medication, contraception, previous investigations and treatments.
A physical examination may be discussed if it is clinically appropriate. You can ask questions, understand why an examination is being considered and provide or withhold consent.
Depending on your circumstances, the next step may include pathology, imaging, medication, symptom tracking, review over time or referral to a gynaecologist or another health professional.
If available, bring the dates of recent periods, a list of medicines and supplements, and previous scan, pathology, surgical or specialist reports. You do not need to have every symptom documented before making an appointment.

Suspected endometriosis and an existing diagnosis
You do not need a confirmed diagnosis to seek care at Mahila. Assessment can begin with your symptoms, medical history and the effect the pain is having on your life.
If you already have an endometriosis diagnosis, your appointment can focus on current symptoms, treatment, side effects, fertility plans, recurrence of pain or coordination with other members of your care team.

Care that can change as your needs change
Endometriosis is a long-term condition, but the support you need may vary over time. Care may include pain management, hormonal treatment, fertility planning, lifestyle support, monitoring, specialist referral or preparation for and follow-up after surgery.
Where appropriate, your doctor may coordinate care with a gynaecologist, pelvic floor physiotherapist, pain specialist, psychologist or another allied health clinician. Treatment decisions should consider your symptoms, medical history, priorities and pregnancy plans.

Mahila Women's Clinic is a private billing practice. The following medical consultation fees apply unless a service page states a different confirmed fee.
A Medicare rebate may apply to an eligible medical consultation. The item billed depends on the service provided, the actual consultation time, the clinician and Medicare requirements.
Procedures, pathology, imaging, products, equipment and other services may involve additional costs. Relevant additional fees should be shown on the individual service page or discussed before the service is provided.
