Adult ADHD Assessments

Holding everything together can hide how hard it is.

ADHD is not always obvious from the outside. An adult assessment looks at lifelong patterns of attention, organisation, impulsivity and emotional regulation, and how they affect everyday functioning.

ADHD can be overlooked in women

ADHD can be overlooked in women

Some women reach adulthood without recognising that the effort required to stay organised, meet deadlines, manage emotions or keep up with everyday demands may be connected to ADHD.

Good results at school, a successful career or appearing organised do not necessarily show how much work is happening behind the scenes. Coping strategies can also become harder to maintain during periods of increased demand or hormonal change.

You may be seeking an assessment after recognising similar traits in a child or family member, learning more about ADHD, or reaching a point where existing strategies no longer feel sustainable.

Your adult ADHD assessment

Look beyond a checklist to the pattern across your life.

An assessment may explore:

  • 01

    attention, distractibility and forgetfulness

  • 02

    planning, organisation and time management

  • 03

    starting, switching and completing tasks

  • 04

    restlessness or impulsive decisions

  • 05

emotional regulation and sensitivity to stress

  • 06

    sleep and energy

  • 07

the effect on work, study, finances, relationships and daily responsibilities

  • 08

    childhood and school experiences

  • 09

mental health, physical health and medication

  • 10

hormonal or life-stage changes that may affect symptoms

The process may involve clinical interviews, validated questionnaires, developmental history and information from previous reports or someone who knows you well. What is required will depend on Mahila's confirmed assessment pathway.

If available, bring school reports, previous psychological or medical assessments, a list of medicines and supplements, and notes about the concerns that prompted you to seek an assessment.

Screening is not the same as diagnosis

Online questionnaires and social media content can help someone recognise possible traits, but they cannot confirm ADHD.

A diagnostic assessment considers whether symptoms began in childhood, occur across more than one area of life and cause meaningful difficulty. It must also consider other possible explanations or overlapping conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, autism, medication effects and hormonal changes.

The outcome may be an ADHD diagnosis, another explanation, a recommendation for further assessment or a combination of findings.

What happens after the assessment

The next step depends on the findings and the clinical pathway available at Mahila. It may include education, practical strategies, psychological support, workplace or study adjustments, treatment of overlapping conditions or referral to another clinician.

Medication is one possible part of ADHD treatment, but it is not the only one. Diagnosis, initiation and prescribing of stimulant medication are governed by professional and Victorian regulatory requirements. Mahila's specific role in diagnosis and medication management will be stated clearly once confirmed.
