Gut Feeling: How Your Microbiome May Influence Your Hormones

Digestive health and hormonal health are sometimes treated as separate issues. In reality, the two systems are in constant conversation. The gut microbiome can influence inflammation, metabolism and the way certain hormones are processed. Hormonal changes can also affect digestion, bowel habits and the microbiome itself.
The relationship is complex, and the research is still developing. However, there are three important connections worth understanding.
The estrobolome and estrogen metabolism
After estrogen has circulated through the body, it is processed by the liver. Some of it enters the intestine, where it would ordinarily continue towards excretion.
Certain gut microbes produce an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. This enzyme can reactivate some processed estrogen, allowing it to be reabsorbed into circulation.
The collection of microbial genes involved in estrogen metabolism is known as the estrobolome.
Researchers are exploring how changes in the gut microbiome may affect estrogen recirculation. This does not mean that every hormonal symptom begins in the gut, or that dysbiosis alone causes heavy periods, PMS or other menstrual concerns. It does mean that gut health may be one part of a much larger hormonal picture.
Stress affects the gut-brain conversation
The gut and brain communicate through nerves, immune signals, hormones and microbial metabolites. Stress can influence digestion, gut sensitivity, motility and, in some people, intestinal barrier function.
This relationship also works in both directions. Persistent gut symptoms can affect sleep, mood and stress levels, while ongoing stress can make digestive symptoms feel more pronounced.
Cortisol is part of the body’s normal stress response, but it is not the whole story. Rather than blaming every symptom on “high cortisol,” it is more useful to look at sleep, nutrition, mental health, movement, medications and the wider clinical picture.
Gut microbes produce important metabolic signals
Gut bacteria ferment certain types of dietary fibre and produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids.
These compounds help the gut communicate with the immune and metabolic systems. They may also influence the release of gut hormones, including GLP-1, which is involved in appetite, insulin release and blood-glucose regulation.
This does not mean that eating more fibre will correct every metabolic or hormonal condition. It does help explain why dietary quality, microbial diversity and metabolic health are closely connected.
Supporting the gut-hormone connection
You do not need to overhaul your entire life. Start with a few practical foundations.
Build plant variety gradually
Include a range of vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds across the week. Different plant foods provide different fibres and nutrients for the gut microbiome.
If you have irritable bowel symptoms, inflammatory bowel disease or significant bloating, increase fibre carefully and seek individual advice. More fibre is not always better for every person.
Include cruciferous vegetables
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts provide fibre and a range of useful nutrients and plant compounds.
They can form part of a balanced diet, but they do not “detox” the body or replace the work performed by the liver, kidneys and digestive system.
Slow down before eating
A short pause before a meal can help you move out of a rushed state. Try taking three slow breaths, sitting down and giving yourself time to eat.
This is not a treatment for gut disease, but it may support slower eating, awareness of hunger and fullness, and a calmer mealtime routine.
Look at the whole picture
Your health does not fit into tidy compartments. Gut symptoms, hormonal changes, sleep, stress, nutrition and metabolic health can overlap.
If you have been trying to improve hormonal symptoms without considering your digestive health, it may be worth looking at both. Equally, persistent bloating, fatigue, heavy bleeding or cycle changes should not simply be attributed to the microbiome.
They deserve a proper clinical assessment and a plan based on your individual health.
